Intra Uterine
Insemination is a painless treatment. The semen is washed in the
laboratory and inseminated into the woman's uterus! Where
fertilization can take place. This method is normally used when the
semen has trouble passing through to the fallopian tube which happens
in cases when infertility is associated with endometriosis! Un
explained infertility! anovulatory infertility! mild degrees of male
factor infertility! cervical infertility.
IVF is a very
effective treatment. The cycle begins when the female undergoes
ovarian stimulation to develop multiple eggs to increase chances of
successful fertilization. When the woman's follicles are mature, egg
retrieval is performed under transvaginal guided ultrasound. In the
laboratory/eggs will be fertilized with the partner's sperm collected
the same day. The embryos are then transferred into the uterus for
normal growth generally 2 to 5 days later. This method is used in
cases where semen quality or quantity is low and/or the woman has
blocked tubes, is not ovulating, or in cases of prolonged unexplained
infertility.
PGD is a
technique involving the identification of the sender and the specific
diseases in the embryo before transferring it to the uterus. By doing
so, it allows 99% accuracy in selecting embryos with desired known
chromosomal constituency.
In some
patients, especially those with repeated previous IVF failure is
advanced maternal age, transferring embryos at the zygote stage (i.e.:
24 hour after retrieval) may prove more successful than the usual
standard mode of embryo transfer. However this technique necessitate
general anesthesia and then performed only on a selected group of
patients.
Surgical sperm
retrieval is a technique for collecting sperm from the vas deferens,
epididymis or testis. This is a minor procedure, usually carried as a
day case surgery under a local or a general anesthetic.
